In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Al-Allaamah Muqbil Bin Haadi Al-Waadi’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him]
Quote: “The scholars [May Allaah have mercy on them] – as in “Al-Muhalla” by Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm and in his book “Ihkam al-Ahkam”, and in “Nayl al-Awtar” by al-Shawkani – made mistakes, but what they (those scholars) possess of virtuous (deeds, service to the religion etc) outweighs the mistakes. As for mistakes in creed or lying about Allaah’s Messenger, the scholars (censured) loudly and warned against it severely”. [Ghaarah Al-Ashritah 1/70-71]
Question to Al-Allaamah Muqbil Bin Haadi Al-Waadi’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him]: Is Jarh Wat Tadeel (the science of criticism and praise) applied to everyone who errs, or is there more clarification in the subject matter- some (receive) criticism and others (receive) advice?
Response: The scholars and the companions (of the Prophet) before them did make mistakes, and some of this was mentioned by Shaikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy on him] in his book “Rahul Malaam Anil A’immatil A’laam”. (1) He mentioned a mistake or mistakes made by Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali bin Abee Taalib [may Allaah be pleased with all of them]. A mention of this affair would too long, so we quickly refer back to the book. As reported in the Saheehayn [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim], Abu Bakr and Omar disputed about the delegation of Banu Tamim, so Abu Bakr said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Give so-and-so authority”, and Omar said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Give so-and-so authority”, to another man. Abu Bakr said to Omar, “You did not want anything but to oppose me”, Omar said, “I did not want to oppose you”, so their voices were raised (in the presence of the Messenger); then Allaah revealed:
ÙÙا Ø£ÙÙÙÙÙÙا اÙÙÙØ°ÙÙÙ٠آÙ
ÙÙÙÙا ÙÙا تÙÙÙدÙÙÙ
ÙÙا بÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙدÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙرÙسÙÙÙÙÙÙ Û ÙÙاتÙÙÙÙÙا اÙÙÙÙÙÙ Û Ø¥ÙÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙ٠سÙÙ
ÙÙا Ø£ÙÙÙÙÙÙا اÙÙÙØ°ÙÙÙ٠آ٠ÙÙÙÙا ÙÙا تÙرÙÙÙعÙÙا Ø£ÙصÙÙÙاتÙÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙÙÙÙ٠صÙÙÙت٠اÙÙÙÙبÙÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÙا تÙجÙÙÙرÙÙا ÙÙÙ٠بÙاÙÙÙÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙجÙÙÙر٠بÙعÙضÙÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙبÙعÙض٠أÙ٠تÙØÙبÙط٠أÙعÙÙ ÙاÙÙÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙØ£ÙÙتÙÙ Ù ÙÙا تÙØ´ÙعÙرÙÙÙÙ
O you who believe! Do not put (yourselves) forward before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Verily! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet nor speak aloud to him in talk as you speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds may be rendered fruitless while you perceive not. [Surah Al-Hujuraat. Aayaat 1-2]
Following on from this disciplinary (statement) and admonition from Allaah [All-Mighty] to Abu Bakr and Umar is likewise what the All-Mighty stated (in another Aayah):
اتÙÙبÙعÙÙا Ù Ùا Ø£ÙÙزÙÙ٠إÙÙÙÙÙÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙ٠رÙÙبÙÙÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙÙÙا تÙتÙÙبÙعÙÙا Ù Ù٠دÙÙÙÙÙ٠أÙÙÙÙÙÙÙØ§Ø¡Ù Û ÙÙÙÙÙÙÙا Ù ÙÙا تÙØ°ÙÙÙÙرÙÙÙÙ
Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qurâan and Prophet Muhammadâs Sunnah), and follow not any Auliyaâ (protectors and helpers, etc.) besides Him (Allah). Little do you remember! [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 3]
However, if the mistake is not related to creed (belief) and the scholar has good (repute, service to Islam etc), his good outweighs the mistake. “Who is it that has never done something bad… and who is it that has only good deeds”. (poetry)Â The scholars [May Allaah have mercy on them] – as in “Al-Muhalla” by Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm and in his book “Ihkam al-Ahkam”, and in “Nayl al-Awtar” by al-Shawkani – made mistakes, but what they (those scholars) possess of virtuous (deeds, service to the religion etc) outweighs the mistakes. As for mistakes in creed or lying about Allaah’s Messenger, the scholars (censured) loudly and warned against it severely.
As for the issue of advice to a person who is mistaken, this is an important matter. It is reported in the Saheehayn [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] from Jareer Bin Abdillah Al-Bajalee [may Allaah be pleased with him] that he said, “I gave a pledge of allegiance to Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] to listen and obey (his orders), establish the prayers perfectly, pay Zakat and to give good advice to every Muslim”.
It is reported in Saheeh Muslim from Tameem Ad-Daaree [may Allaah be pleased with him] that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The religion is sincerity of purpose”. (2) Rather, Allaah narrated about some of His Prophets (that they said to their people): “ÙÙØ£ÙÙصÙØÙ ÙÙÙÙÙ Û¡ – and give sincere advice to you”. [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 62]
So, with regards to advice, the scholars have not ceased – amongst themselves- giving advice regarding mistakes and clarifying a mistake together with (acknowledging) what a scholar possesses of virtue. (3) There is no harm if this is needed. And Allaah’s aid is sought! [An Excerpt from Ghaaratal Ashritati Alaa Ahlil Jahli Was-safsatati. Vol 1. Pages 70-71. slightly paraphrased]
Finally, indeed, Abdur Rahmaan Hasan was refuted due to his oppositions to the sound Salafi Methodology and he received the treatment he deserved, therefore, there is no room for that confused African who insinuates that those who rebutted him were lacking in manners. Read:
